Last summer, in the name of pension reform, the House leadership pushed through a bill that gutted worker pension protections. The House slashed laws that require that if the top execs get a pension benefit, most of their workers must be given a benefit too. The House bill allows companies to pocket tax breaks for lavishing pensions on their executives while doing nothing for the bulk of their workers. Corporations will cut back the number of workers with 401k plans and the amount of corporate contributions. Literally, millions of workers will be robbed of billions of dollars in corporate contributions.

The Senate bill retains the old protections, but the corporate lobby hopes to slip the changes through in the final bill that comes of the backroom conference committee.

Twenty-nine Enron executives walked away with over $1 billion while misleading their workers–who watched their lives savings disappear. Now in the name of reform after Enron, the House passed provisions - pushed by the corporate lobby and House Republican Committee Chair Bill Thomas - that will make it easier for executivess to stiff their workers.

The current bill the Senate is considering continues to protect workers. But once the bill passes the Senate, it will go into a closed door conference with the House. Whatever comes out of that backroom will pass both houses of Congress as "pension reform." The corporate lobbyists, who are keeping their heads down in the Senate debate, will put full court pressure on the conference committee to accept the House outrage. If they succeed, the President and the Congress will take credit for "pension reform," and workers will have been robbed once more in the backrooms.
