In July, the Campaign for America's Future and a broad coalition of national and local organizations began having events across the country demanding that Members of Congress "declare their independence" from President Bush's dangerous plans to privatize Social Security and cut guaranteed benefits.
TOGETHER we can call the nation's attention to these dangerous privatization plans and the politicians who support them – before, not after, Election Day.
We are joining together to hold town meetings and media events to explain how much damage the Bush privatization plans will do to Social Security -- and to all of us who depend on this vital program. And we will challenge politicians to Sign the Pledge to Protect Social Security -- and to support a real prescription drug plan under Medicare.

Background:
President Bush's advisors have already written plans to privatize Social Security and his supporters in Congress plan to enact this dangerous proposal after the 2002 election.
Their plan to turn Social Security into a privatized investment scheme drains trillions of dollars away from Social Security that is needed to pay benefits, forcing benefit cuts and a higher retirement age. They are promising voters that current retirees and those about to retire will “not be affected” by their plans. But they’ve already broken their promise not to spend Social Security money on other purposes, and we can’t let them break another promise to our workers and retirees.
< p>Many members of Congress and candidates for office support privatization – but they know about the problems caused by privatization and they don’t want to talk about it until after the election. We say that the time to come clean is now so that the American people can make an educated choice.
Politicians should "declare their independence" from President Bush's privatization plan and say:
- “No” to benefit cuts and raising the retirement age
< li>“No” to draining trillions of dollars from Social Security for privatization
- “No” to Bush privatization plans
- "Yes" to a REAL prescription drug plan in Medicare
The Campaign for America's Future leads the Alliance for Social Security, a broad coalition of organizations fighting to defend Social Security from politicians who would privatize the system.
